MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a way for compatible AI applications to interact with tools and data. A business can use it to expose defined capabilities, but a website does not need MCP merely to be readable or searchable. It is an integration option, not a universal AI discovery requirement.

Start with the customer task

Useful capabilities might include reading package details, checking permitted options and requesting a checkout link. These are narrow tasks with clear inputs and outputs. They are different from giving an assistant access to the company's payment dashboard or customer database.

For many businesses, a readable offer page and a working hosted checkout are the appropriate first step. Add another integration when there is a real client or platform that can use it.

Separate reading from changing

Public offer information can be available without customer account access. Creating a customer-specific order or reading its status needs an appropriate authorization model. The tool should expose only the information and action the caller is entitled to use.

The MCP authorization specification describes authorization for HTTP-based implementations. That does not replace the merchant's responsibility to enforce ownership and business rules.

Keep payment authority explicit

An assistant knowing how to call a tool does not mean it has permission to spend. A supported checkout must still present the correct amount and obtain the required customer authorization. Payment credentials belong in the intended payment system, not in ordinary tool responses or chat transcripts.

Design for mistakes and retries

Requests may be repeated or arrive with outdated information. The server should recalculate prices, prevent duplicate orders and return understandable errors. Tool descriptions should explain exactly what the action does.

MCP can make a purchasing workflow easier for compatible agents to use. It cannot guarantee that every AI platform discovers the business, accepts the integration or recommends the offer. Build it around a verified customer journey and keep the access narrower than the company's internal administration tools.
